Just two of the most exciting recent initiatives are:
Corby Train Station
Not only a great-looking site, Corby Railway Station is also the winner of the IHT/ Costain Award for Effective Partnerships. The Award was given in recognition of the close partnership working that enabled the £8.3m station to be constructed on time, on budget and to a very high standard.
Construction of the station began in February 2008 and was completed in December 2008. The project signalled the end of a 40-year wait for the return of a passenger rail service and means Corby is no longer the largest town in Europe without a train station.
An interim service run by East Midlands Trains began in February 2009 and the full service, including a direct hourly service between Corby and London St Pancras, was officially launched in April 2009.
Regeneration of Northampton – A Regional City
Northampton will be transformed into a prosperous and dynamic regional city with a growing knowledge-based economy.
Regeneration of the Town Centre – a “Development Framework for the Central Area” has been completed identifying major opportunities for redevelopment. These include:
- Over £55 million to kick-start development on Northampton Waterside. The programme will deliver flood alleviation work, transport improvements, 2,000 housing units and over 8, 000 sqm of industrial floor space. It will safeguard local jobs and pave the way for a new healthcare facility
- £20 million allocated to road schemes in the South West District of the town to further open up development and improve the town’s connectivity
- A landmark development of the Castle Station is also planned to reflect the transformation of Northampton from being a town to becoming a city
