If your interest is history then take your time to tour round the many beautiful villages and towns of Northamptonshire that have a US connection.

Flore

John Adams family came from Flore – His great grandfather Thomas Adams lived in this pretty village. There are some wonderful shops and plenty of places to relax and take in the history.

Lamport Architecturally, Lamport Hall is of Grade I importance. During the time of the Commonwealth, the Hall was developed from a Tudor Manor and is now best known for its classical frontage. The Hall contains a wealth of outstanding furniture, books and paintings collected by the Isham family. Most were bought during the third Baronet’s Grand Tour of Europe, in the 1670s. They include portraits by Van Dyck, Kneller, Lely and others. But a little known fact to impress your friends is that Henry Isham was related to your very own Thomas Jefferson.

Lamport Hall was also the home to the first garden gnome!

Hall open: April to October on Sundays and throughout August Sunday – Friday

Ecton

Benjamin Franklin’s ancestors all came from here. Franklin himself even visited a number of years later. The pub The Three Horseshoes is situated on the spot where his uncle’s smithy once stood and their graves are in the local church yard.

Grafton Underwood

For those with an interest in military history, Grafton Underwood is a must. This picturesque village housed one of the most important USAF bases during the Second World War. The station at Grafton was regarded as the most important Air base as it was from here that their first and last bombing missions of the Second World War flew. You can also pay your respects and visit the memorial to the American 8th Air Force.

Carpetbagger Aviation Museum

The Carpetbagger Aviation Museum was formed in 1993 for the 50th Anniversary reunion of the USAF's 801st / 492nd Bomb Group (The Carpetbaggers) at Harrington. It is housed in the Group Operations Building on the Administration Site of the former Station 179 airfield at Harrington, Northamptonshire, England. Displays and exhibits within the museum depict the history of the airfield and vividly show the work carried out by the 801st (Provisional) / 492nd Bomb Group, especially during Operation Carpetbagger, and their secret missions to deliver agents and supplies to resistance groups in Occupied Europe during the Second World War.

Kelmarsh Hall

Kelmarsh Hall is a graceful Grade I listed 18th Century Palladian country house, set in beautiful romantic gardens and is the former home of Nancy Lancaster, a Virginian born socialite who inspired the timeless and elegant ‘English Country House Style’. The Hall and gardens still reflects Nancy’s style and is surrounded by its own working estate in the rolling Northamptonshire countryside.
