Sulgrave also houses the largest UK collection of George Washington memorabilia demonstrating the British contribution to the origins of the USA with a separate exhibition on George's life and career in the US.

Lived in by four generations of the Washington Family from 1539 to 1657 Home to the largest UK collection of Washington memorabilia Held in trust for the peoples of the United States and the United Kingdom Sulgrave Manor is a superb example of a modest manor house of Shakespeare’s time and was home to the ancestors of George Washington. Visitors view the Great Hall, Kitchen and Bedchamber now, full of the furniture and artefacts of the period, as they must have looked in the time of Lawrence Washington who bought the manor from Henry VIII in 1539.

Visitors are welcomed and taken around the Manor house by a friendly, informative guide who will introduce them to what many consider to be ‘a hidden gem’ amongst historic houses – in this land rich with history.

The Manor is of special interest to Americans as the ancestral home of their first President, George Washington, Sulgrave offers USA visitors a sense of pilgrimage to some of their country’s roots. The house is full of Washington memorabilia and there is a special exhibit on his early life. Along with their British cousins, US Citizens ‘own’ the house which is held in trust for the peoples of the UK and the USA.
