Rockingham Forest is in the North East of the county and covers some 200 square miles, between the Rivers Welland and Nene and the towns of Stamford and Kettering. Designated as a royal hunting ground for William the Conqueror after the Norman Conquest, the term forest was used as a legal jurisdiction for the King's hunting preserves rather than an area of continuous woodland.
Today, the Forestry Commission has introduced an Ancient Woodlands Project to replant large areas of native species such as Oak and Ash and a Landscape Characterisation Project aimed at making the area more sustainable for wildlife and history and to maintain the unique character of the area with help from local communities.
Incorporated in this outstanding area of natural beauty is the stunning village of Rockingham itself. Here you can visit Rockingham Castle, built for William the Conqueror almost 1000 years ago or for those seeking more adrenalin style activities, there is Rockingham Motor Racing Circuit on the outskirts of the village offering raceday experiences, high speed events and pop concerts.
